Volume 3- 2008

Hi' Y'all from Texas

Wow 104 degrees yesterday, really hot. We are once again in our little cottage outside San Marcos, preparing on Tuesday to start the 2008 Instructor Clinic. This will be the second one we have run, this time we limited the numbers to 10 to allow us to spend more time individually with each one. The past twelve months have taught not only us but the rookiealso instructors that becoming a professional instructor is not just a matter of shouting to the world "I passed I am an ET Instructor" to be successful. It takes hard work, cooperation with ETF and the NCC as well as team playing, and goal achievement. The succesful ET Instructorand must have a high degree of credibility in the horse world to have horse owners put their trust in their hands.

This year we have rookies from Denmark, Italy and New Zealand joing a strong UK team and three from the USA. Ivqanqa as usual is sitting up researching and fine tunning evrything for them and then handing it over to me to translate it from her unique brand of Chenglish into my brand of Scots. Luckily Raian Kaiser turned up this evening so she will have the awesome pleasure of proof reading for both of us.

If we survive the next week, the heat, the rookie instructors and the Texas Bar B Q's we'll let you know how it turned out and introduce yoiu to the new members of the ET Instructor team. ____________________________________________________________________________________________

Educating Horses to help Humans? or just plain CURIOUS

Let's look at the C words:

A horse can be courageous, crafty, cunning, clever, cowardly, contrary, cautious, cranky, conniving, caring, cheeky, comical, challenging, cagey, calamitous, calm, capable, captivating, centered, childish, changeable, collected, conformed, cold-backed, colicky, compact, committed, confrontational, confused, and one of the most important for Equine Touch students and practitioners CURIOUS !

It is this trait of curiosity which is so important to us as we practice the discipline. This curiosity is part of the prey animal protection protocol. The purpose behind the ET branding is to address this curiosity and to answer the question that the horse asks of us as the predator invader of its space. Ask any credible trainer, the horse asks a question of us and it depends upon our ability to answer it as to how the horse will respond to us. If we answer incorrectly then we know we have a problem. When we enter the horses space the first question is asked. If we answer it correctly before we even put our hands on the horse we have placed yourself in the first win position.

If the horse allows you then to complete the branding, and you should watch his eyes and head as you are asked the next question, on answering it correctly you now place yourself in the win win position.

Now the next question is yours ' Will you work with me?', 'The answer is always another question 'Why, what's in it for me?' If you answer that one correctly you are in the WIN, WIN, WIN situation which is the ideal state to do ET.

UK AND EUROPE COMING BACK TO LIFE WITH SUMMER ON THE WAY

Following the sun , this is a scene that we find very hard to envisage. Boy does that look cold, though it is nice to see a correct technique being executed. Good hook with the hoof and a perfect tripod with the student's feet placement in realtion to the horses other hind foot. Lovely to see, and a pretty big horse to boot. This is what it is all about good students good instructors and the work totally recognizable.

The Northern winter is always a nightmare, while we complain about the weather being 30 above, our northernmost instructor Maria Bucht informs us that it is 30 below at her place. No wonder the Vikings kept sailing south. Did you know the maoris were described many years ago as "The Vikings of the Sunrise" by the renowned Maori/Irish ethnologist Peter Buck (Te Rangi Hiroa).

With the winter over classes will be resuming once again under the direction of the UK NCC and the National and Regional Instructors. Check out the two UK web sites for information and of course below you will find our Level 3 & 4 clinics for June this year.

We are receiving great stories from Ireland about racing winners and hope to have some of them in this or the next E Letter. Which reminds me to change the subject slightly, we need stories from all over. Send a story, send a pictire and help us make this E Letter something for everyone everywhere.

Please note we will be holding L3/L4 at Hartsop Farm this June. See you there
