Volume 9 August - 2009

Aloha Everybody, First off I must apologize to all of you who received a 'mistake' re the ET newsletter a couple of days ago. It was my first attempt at sending it out myself and unfortunately, computers are not forgiving, unlike horses, and so I tapped a wrong key and away it went out to the multitude. Hopefully this time will show I have learned where I made the last mistake. I am certain that I will make more until I have the hang of it but hope that like the horse, you will be forgiving. In every cloud they say their is a silver lining however and if I had not made that mistake I would not have had the opportunity to include the last article in this letter which is extremely important for all of us in the non invasive equine bodywork world.

Its summer in Czech, hot, no air and too much food. Apart from that it has been great being able to walk into the office at 6am every morning, catch up with everything and everyone, and get stuck in to all the new projects. So far I have managed to rewrite the entire VHT course, putting it into six modules with six complete sections, have updated the Level 4 ET and Beyond ready for the USA tour and Ivana has completed the new Level 3 Practical Instruction manual. Now she is getting heavily involved in the dissection and anatomy material while I am sending off the new 'Mobilization and Stretching manual' 50 pages to be proof read next week.

Next week we are presenting the 1st Level ET clinic in Czech for years and have students coming from as far away as Holland, it is something we are looking forward to, many languages and many cultures all at the same time.

Ivana was scheduled to go into Canada but the Canuck government has brought out a visa restriction against Czech citizens, so that has thrown a spanner in the works, at least until we find out exactly the situation regarding Green Card holders. Have you ever tried to contact the visa section of an embassy? Makes trying to talk to a representative at United Airlines easy, and then after waiting for 30 minutes they tell you this call, if they connect you to a human being, will cost you $3.50 per minute.

As a result, our Fall USA tour has altered slightly so I thought it best to stick it in right at the start so that those who wish to catch up with us can bring their diaries up to date.

The Level 3 clinic in Texas at San Marcos will be the last level 3 in its current form in the USA, the new syllabus kicking in from the 1st of January world wide. We will be announcing the new format to all at the international conference on the 19th and 20th of September at the Newmarket Racing School as well as unveiling our new Newsletter, Web site, Manuals and Certificates. All in all this will be quite a year for ET as well as Ivana and I who celebrate out ten years of globetrotting marriage trying to get the message out there. Talking about the message getting out we were having lunch the other day with one of the foremost equine surgeons in Europe and as always the subject came around to training. The agreed conclusion of the conversation that the one element the vast majority of trainers do not take into consideration is PAIN, lameness yes, its visual, but pain no. Why? What do we have to do to make these people who are so important to the well being of the horse understand the most simple of facts? Reduced pain = Improved performance.

'STOP PRESS' WARNING FOR THOSE DOWN UNDER, RE THE DISSECTION CLINIC: I know the world is a small place but even although this clinic is being held in New Zealand, already there are several students, booked and paid up, coming from USA and Australia. So please book now if you are intending to attend. The numbers will be strictly limited.

Q: From Kirsty in UK for Jock: Since learning VHT I am experiencing a strange sensation. When I go to work on a horse or a human my hands start to turn red hot, my human clients have noticed this, can you give me any advice on this effect.

A: Hot hands or 'Hands Switching On' is reasonably common, though not often to such a noticeable degree as you have mentioned. It is of course an energy phenomenon and could be probably explained by many different schools of Reiki, Ki, Kahuna or other energy based disciplines. I have run across it throughout the world, especially where the energy healing arts are really believed in and this phenomenon taught and controlled. For the human this can some times be uncomfortable as it can be invasive especially if not requested. For instance if people just want cold clinical bodywork and no Reiki then it is of course hard for you to switch off. Learning how to ground yourself and take control of your intent is probably the best way to get around that problem. I am forever saying to my advanced students let your integrity lead not your intent. In some instances if that intent and that energy is out in front your client, human or horse will put up a barrier to it, or quite simply move away.

The fact that you have the gift is wonderful, what will be magnificent is if you can develop the talent and the discipline to control it. Look inward, learn about yourself, do not listen to others, their belief is often taught to them by others, you must learn about yourself, experiment with your breathing and your mind when you go to work on people, visualize, pull back your enthusiasm to (dare I use the word) 'heal'. Become disciplined and learn to control your gift, rather than letting it control you. This secret is something that only you alone can teach yourself, it takes time, and you have plenty of that.

Q: From Denmark for Ivana. Can I use ET on a horse with Sarcoids and do you know if it has had any success?

A: Sarcoids often develop on thin skin such as eyelids and ears and many time on the site of injury or where an injury was previously. As they are 'cancer' there need to be a properly diagnosed and treated with no messing around. The successful treatment protocol is still unknown, there are many approaches, as freezing (cryotherapy), laser removal or injecting the sarcoids with chemotherapy drugs. Treatment with BCG injections supports the immune system and there are also many herbal topical creams to address the sarcoids, all with various results. The effective treatment is more certain if the lesions are treated early and in younger horses. The truth is that we still do not know all about the sarcoids and sarcoids are one of the most frustrating conditions for the horse owner as well as for the veterinarians.ET is not a treatment but it is a complementary modality for many conventional and complementary therapies. It can support the immune system, as many 'anecdotal' case studies shown. One of our leading Texas ET practitioners Pam Cantwell had good results with two horses (veterinary certified), where there was a disappearance of the Sarcoids after only a couple of sessions. Veterinary medicine describes spontaneous 'healing' in some types of sarcoids so these cases can be quite possible.

I would approach the horse with the same technique as any other horse, I would work with him with BBB on the start and observe the reaction after the session to be that you can see all the changes in his body to ensure that the next areas of concern would be correctly chosen. I would avoid the sites of the sarcoids, as it is still not known if the tumor can be spread by contact from one site to another or from one horse to another. Also any physical trauma, can transform the Sarcoids into the fibroplastic form, which looks like a proud flesh and is very hard to treat. Hope this helps.

We will be holding two Level 1 and 2 symposiums on the West Coast, one on, and one a few miles off, in a former British Protectorate called Hawai'i. We need all our sun loving people out there to get motivated to make this a success. Please get the word out to everyone that we are coming as both venues are excellent, as are the horses. But remember all horses need ET.

Join us at 'Flag is Up Farms' in Solvang, CA, the home of the world famous ' Shy Boy' and learn The Foundation or the Intermediate Level of ET (level 1 and 2) with Jock and Ivana and some of the best trained horses in the world at one of the greatest equine teaching facilities on the planet. Bookings are being taken either direct with Jock and Ivana personally at equinetouchinc@aol.com or with Raian Kaiser at the NCC USA equinetouchncc@yahoo.com

In November Jock and Ivana return to their Honeymoon island, Maui to hold a clinic Level 1 and Level 2 Clinic for Jill Fairchild at the Waihe'e Valley Plantation, Waihe'e Valley Road, Waihe'e. This is a course that both the founders are specially looking forward to apart from getting married there Jock has a long history with the islands as a song writer, show writer and producer. Book now or get the word out to your friends to contact Jill Fairchild at horsesfromtheheart@mac.com . or call her on 808 357 6131

In many of my articles, classes and even when working with horses myself I am continually spouting off, probably even boring everyone about breathing, relaxing, reducing your energy level allowing yourself to sink in to yourself and to allow your integrity to lead your intent. So it was with great interest that I read an article in the 'Horse Magazine' a few weeks ago which made me punch the air, at last substance to support the intuition.

An increase in a human's heart rate affects the heart rate of the horse they are leading or riding, researchers at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences recently reported.
Linda Keeling, PhD, and colleagues tested horses and riders to see if humans inadvertently communicate fear and anxiety to horses. Using heart rate as a fear indicator, the researchers asked 20 people with varying levels of horse experience to walk and ride 10 horses from Point A to Point B four times.
The researchers told participants an umbrella would open as they rode or led the horse on the fourth pass. The umbrella never opened, but heart rates in both horses and humans increased during the fourth trip between the points, when the human expected the umbrella to open.
"The increase in the horses' heart rates probably means that they are more alert and prepared to react to any potential danger," Keeling said. "In the wild, horses are adapted to respond to other animals in their group. A startle reaction is more likely when the horse is very alert."
If you are a nervous person leading or riding a horse, your nervousness might increase the likelihood of the "spook" that you are anxious to avoid.

OK. What this means translated into ET is simply that if you are up tight, energy high, nervous, worried about the horse to the point where the horse can pick up that you are not relaxed, balanced, calm in mind and spirit, then neither will the horse be. Look at all the true greats, Hunt, Roberts, Rashid, Stewart. study them. Do you ever see them raise their energy level or speed when working with a horse. So it must be when you are performing bodywork on a horse, keep the energy down, allow your integrity, and the calmness and reassurance for the horse, that comes along with it to precede your intent. These animals are so receptive to any sign of alarm, imaginary or real that they will react instantly in many different ways usually alarming.

Victory for Maryland Entrepreneur in Animal Massage Dispute 30th July: Summary - Mercedes Clemens has a massage practice which caters for Humans and Horses. She was threatened with legal action by the Veterinary Board and also the Chiropractic Board of Maryland, and ordered to cease and desist. She decided she was not going to pushed around or bullied and so like the equine dentists in Texas decided to take them to court. The vets knowing they would lose immediately capitulated, however the Chiropractor Board decided to continue with attacking Mercedes, stating that she could not offer massage to animals. Well the lassie won. You get what you deserve, good on her, she has taken one mighty step for all of us.

Judge Declares Regulatory Board Engaged in “Illegal” Actions

Arlington, Va.—At a hearing today in Montgomery County Circuit Court, Judge David Boynton declared that Maryland equine-massage entrepreneur Mercedes Clemens is now free to return to the occupation she loves. Judge Boynton recognized that the Maryland Board of Chiropractic Examiners has no authority to regulate animal massage and that it was “illegal” for the Board to force Mercedes to stop her practice.

“All Mercedes has ever asked for is the assurance that she can work in the job she loves without being illegally put out of business at the whim of regulatory bureaucrats,” said Mercedes’ attorney Paul Sherman of the Institute for Justice (IJ), the nation’s leading legal advocate for economic liberty. “This ruling grants her exactly what she wanted and is a wonderful victory for all Maryland entrepreneurs who want to provide these services.”

Mercedes Clemens has a thriving massage practice in Rockville that, until recently, offered both human and animal massage. In addition to being a licensed massage therapist for people, Mercedes has more than 30 years of practical experience as a horse owner and rider, has been privately certified in equine massage and has even taught animal massage to others.

Despite these qualifications, the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners teamed up with the Maryland Board of Chiropractic Examiners and ordered her to stop practicing animal massage and to take down the parts of her web site offering the service.

In June 2008, Mercedes teamed up with the Institute for Justice and filed a lawsuit to defend her right to earn an honest living free from unreasonable government regulations. A month later, the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners back pedaled on its position that only licensed veterinarians may perform animal massage. Nonetheless, the Chiropractic Board refused to acknowledge Mercedes’ right to economic liberty.

“I love that I can finally get back to business,” said Mercedes. “All I’ve ever wanted is the right to work. I never asked for a bailout or even monetary damages, just the freedom to earn an honest living in the occupation I love. Today that freedom was restored to me.”

Clemens, who was threatened with criminal prosecution and thousands of dollars in fines for massaging horses in Maryland, has received international media attention. A Washington Post feature that includes video footage of Mercedes is available online: http://tinyurl.com/44wu3w.

“Regulatory boards across the country are out of control, abusing their power to shut down honest entrepreneurs,” said IJ Senior Attorney Scott Bullock. “The Institute for Justice is committed to correcting this injustice by ensuring that these boards are held accountable for their actions and forbidden from engaging in illegal activities.”

IJ President and General Counsel Chip Mellor said, “This lawsuit is an important part of the Institute for Justice’s nationwide campaign to restore economic liberty to all Americans by defending their constitutional right to earn an honest living. Mercedes’ victory today marks a meaningful step in that direction.”
